I have always been a strong proponent of using semantic related words within the content of the site as well as articles. If done properly and naturally, this helps readers get a better context of the topic, as well as serving Google a better idea of the entire scope of what you are focusing on. With the information that it has from a variety of sources (including Google+) they are starting to include this intelligence with their search to provide more accurate and closely targeted results for users.
